Installation Design
Graduation Project
As part of my graduation project, I worked with Hexagramm Design, co-founded by Ankon Mitra, an architect and internationally acclaimed artist who leads the studio’s Oritecture branch, a practice that blends origami and architecture to create unique spatial installations. During my time there, I contributed to several projects, with one of the main ones being “Shroom”, an experiential space created for Asian Paints at India Design ID 2023. The project focused on transforming paper and form into a meaningful, site-specific design that reflected the client’s identity and vision.

The project was based on a trend analysis and shade card provided by Asian Paints, with the concept developed by Wari Watai and the spatial execution led by Hexagramm Design. The installation, titled “Shroom” (short for Mushroom), explored the idea of organic growth and transformation through form, color, and light.
Mockups were created through form exploration, experimenting with different shapes and compositions inspired by the natural structure of mushrooms. To visualize the final setup, photoshopped renderings were developed for a cleaner and more realistic look. These helped in deciding the number, size, and placement of the mushrooms in the space, making sure the overall setup looked balanced and visually appealing.
Before creating the large metal frames in their actual proportions, small-scale models were first made using GI wire to study the structure and form. Once the initial frames were produced, sampling was done to check for any issues or adjustments needed before moving to the final build. The origami pattern was then generated in AutoCAD for precise laser cutting, allowing the folds to be created accurately and efficiently. After this, prototyping was carried out using the actual materials to see if the final outcome matched the original idea and design intent, and to identify any modifications required before full-scale production.

Next, color testing was carried out using a variety of materials to match the shades provided by Asian Paints. Different combinations were explored, including colored fabrics, LED lights, tinted papers, textured materials, and glass paints, to see how each interacted with light. Since achieving the exact color through lighting can be challenging, as light behaves differently from surface color, multiple tests were done to observe how the hues appeared when illuminated from within the mushroom forms. This process helped in selecting the right materials and lighting setup to bring out the desired color tones effectively.

The final installation of Shroom was showcased at India Design ID 2023 as part of the Asian Paints exhibit.
